Ri Bhoi College is one of the Higher Educational Institutions of Ri Bhoi District in Meghalaya. The institution is situated in the heart of Nongpoh, the headquarter of Ri Bhoi District. The College was initially set up as an intermediate college on the 9th of September, 1984, under the guidance and inspiration of Shri D.D.Lapang, who is also the local MLA along with the founder Principal (Late) Shri. R.I.Masharing,Shri D.D.Lapang and the (Late) R.I.Masharing felt the need of setting up a College in Nongpoh to cater to the needs of the Ri Bhoi students willing to pursue collegiate education. In 1993, the College was upgraded to a degree College after being granted rovisional affiliation by North Eastern Hill University. It was established to cope with the demand for setting up of a college for students of the district who could not afford to move to the capital city for higher studies. It is a co-educational Institution. Through many vicissitudes, the college went on to stand independently, acquiring of its own plot of land and building to meet the growing requirement.
Over the years the College has been making great contributions to the Academic needs of the Student Community of the District by playing a vital role in the overall development of education. The College offers undergraduate courses in both Arts and Commerce Streams. The college was brought under the Deficit Scheme of Grant-in Aid on the 1st April, 1997. Since then, the college has made sincere efforts to upgrade itself and to acquire Permanent Affiliation for both Arts stream as well as Affiliation of its newly introduced Bachelor of Commerce stream. In this regard, the Academic Council of the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, has deemed fit for the college to be accorded Permanent Affiliation in Arts Stream (Pass and Honours Courses in Economics, Political Science, Education and Elective Khasi) on the 14th of December 2004 as well as Temporary Affiliation for the Bachelor of Commerce pass course only. The enrollment of students has shown an upward trend and at present the number stands at approximately 1500. There is more than 40 teaching and non- teaching staff assisting the students to re-evaluate and plan for their future faced with new challenging needs of our times.
Toward standard enhancement and quality education for the students, on 1st March 2022, the college introduced additional subjects in the Higher Secondary Section -Sociology and Philosophy under the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), and Provisional Affiliation was granted from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong for the encompassment of the Undergraduate honours program in Sociology and Philosophy. Of late, Ri Bhoi College has moved up under the People’s Grant-in-Aid Scheme by the Government of Meghalaya.

I am indeed very happy that Ri Bhoi College has completed more than Thirty Years of dedicated service to the cause of higher education in Ri Bhoi District giving prime concern to the needs of the disadvantaged and differently abled students. This has been made possible because of the resolute faith and self-sacrifice of the visionaries, Dr D.D.Lapang, Shri R.R.K.Makdoh, Shri J.D. Rymbai and (L) Smti Belsimai Syiem who pioneered and have given their contribution for the growth of this institution.
I appreciate the endeavours of my predecessors, Prof H. Syiemlieh, (L) Shri R.I. Masharing and Shri H.C.Bathew which have yielded results in many areas. The College has grown over the years certainly not without ups and downs.
I assumed office as the Principal of Ri Bhoi College in 2004. On taking up the position, I comprehended that there are a number of important goals to pursue and to strive persistently to create the necessary conditions to ensure quality higher education. I appreciate the confidence reposed by the staff on me and in this connection I take this opportunity to make a special mention and to thank them for their co-operation and commitment in bringing the college to its present position.
We will make every effort to introduce add- on courses and to make a breakthrough in vocationalising education thus to look upon education in the wider context for students to use skills to earn their living enabling them to cope with the demands of the century. Instilling in the young people a civic sense and inculcating values among them for their personal development will be our utmost concern.
Our special gratitude to the Website Committee for setting up and maintaining the Ri- Bhoi College website with all relevant information about the institution in a way that will make everything easy to explore. Hoping that all concerned will go through the website to get clarity about the educational institute.
We hope that shortcomings will be removed in future and the college will give a better account of itself. I have no doubt all the staff would reiterate to bring honour to the institution by making meaningful contributions. With gratitude to God we will continue our journey ahead to uphold the motto of the College “Steadfast unto the end”.
A vision based on the realities is a must for the Institution. This vision can only be expected from its Staff and students who have the driving spirit for making it a reality. To this end, higher education will be made an effective instrument to usher progress and prosperity for the individuals and the nation as a whole. Ri Bhoi College has a vision and sheer determination of illuminating the Ri Bhoi District and uplifting the educational standard of the area. Improving the reach and standards of education services is crucial if the District has to compete for higher – value economic activity.
Ri Bhoi College commits itself to continue to strive to discover its true mission of harnessing education for the upliftment of the youths of the District against the backdrop of great changes that are sweeping in the field of education. The college will undertake the task of awakening the dormant talents of students as a mission to meet the challenges of the millennium. Efforts towards vocationalisation of education will be made so that it becomes functional and useful. Creative ways will be developed to access human and technical resource outside the education system.
