English Department

Ri Bhoi College in its long history of 36 years had a trepid beginning at the local leader Shri D. D. Lapang’s Residence in the year 1984. It began as an evening college for students to pursue the Pre-Degree Course in Arts and in 1986 progressed to a college offering a Bachelor of Arts Pass Course. Thereafter it progressed to offer various Honours Courses in Arts and expanded to offer Bachelor of Commerce and Commerce Honours. English was taught at the very beginning of the evening College and pioneering teachers had tremendous influence on the students such as K.Pokhrel, Arkin Pariat, H. C.Bathew, P. M.Makdoh,BedariusShylla, E. C. Benny, and later on Cathey Saibourne, Barry Kharkonger and others who enriched the teaching environment with their enviable presence. Today that tradition is carried on by H C Bathew, E C Benny, Edna Pasweth, Anomica Lyngdoh, Christie Masharing, and Dona Shabong.

The English Department of Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh was founded on the 9th of September 1984. The Department had evolvedfromits humble beginning when the College was merely an Evening College which shifted itself from DM Hall of the former Chief Minister Shri D. D.Lapang to Ri Bhoi Presbyterian High School, Nongpoh to its present permanent campus as a fully pledged Department offering English Honours with the introduction of the Semester system in the year 2015.

Today English honoursare the most sought-after subject in Ri Bhoi College and it is managed by our very senior Teachers in the Department like H. C.Bathew, E. C. Benny, and Edna Pasweth. More than a thousand students have passed their Degree course in English Honours and the Department is at the forefront of various activities in the College.
