The Department of History was established in September 1984 as one of the undergraduate disciplines. The department aims to empower the students to perceive the concepts like time, place, and society. It will disseminate the students with a critical outlook on history and create responsible students who will contribute to the nation’s integrity. The objectives of the department are to provide reliable knowledge about history, to make aware of the emerging trends in history, and to study the social, political, economic, and cultural influences on human development.
The department has produced innumerable students since its inception. In 2004 Ri Bhoi College introduced honours in History. In 2014 with the introduction of the semester system History was one of the major subjects which many students opted for as their honours paper. The student scoring the highest marks in the honour paper is awarded a medal by the department. Besides giving lectures, the department organizes class-wise seminars, debates, and group discussions, and visits historical sites. Above all the faculty are always ready to render all possible assistance and guidance within and outside campus as and when required.
In its commencement, the department was headed by Smt. (Lt.) Rita Dkhar and she were assisted by Shri. B. Majaw. From 1996 onwardsHistory Department was headed by Smt. M. Kharshiing. The other faculty associated with the department are Shri. (Dr) B. W. Wahlang, Smt. C Syeimlieh(for three years) and Smt. C Bamon.
