Ri Bhoi College is one of the Higher Educational Institutions of Ri Bhoi District in Meghalaya. The institution is situated in the heart of Nongpoh, the headquarter of Ri Bhoi District. The College was initially set up as an intermediate college on the 9th of September, 1984, under the guidance and inspiration of Shri D.D.Lapang, who is also the local MLA along with the founder Principal (Late) Shri. R.I.Masharing. Shri D.D.Lapang and the (Late) R.I.Masharing felt the need of setting up a College in Nongpoh to cater to the needs of the Ri Bhoi students willing to pursue collegiate education. In 1993, the College was upgraded to a degree College after being granted rovisional affiliation by North Eastern Hill University. It was established to cope with the demand for setting up of a college for students of the district who could not afford to move to the capital city for higher studies. It is a co-educational Institution. Through many vicissitudes, the college went on to stand independently, acquiring of its own plot of land and building to meet the growing requirement.
Over the years the College has been making great contributions to the Academic needs of the Student Community of the District by playing a vital role in the overall development of education. The College offers undergraduate courses in both Arts and Commerce Streams. The college was brought under the Deficit Scheme of Grant-in Aid on the 1st April, 1997. Since then, the college has made sincere efforts to upgrade itself and to acquire Permanent Affiliation for both Arts stream as well as Affiliation of its newly introduced Bachelor of Commerce stream. In this regard, the Academic Council of the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, has deemed fit for the college to be accorded Permanent Affiliation in Arts Stream (Pass and Honours Courses in Economics, Political Science, Education and Elective Khasi) on the 14th of December 2004 as well as Temporary Affiliation for the Bachelor of Commerce pass course only. The enrollment of students has shown an upward trend and at present the number stands at approximately 1300. Currently the College has 37 Teaching and 17 Non- Teaching Staff.
Toward standard enhancement and quality education for the students, on 1st March 2022, the college introduced additional subjects in the Higher Secondary Section -Sociology and Philosophy under the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), and Provisional Affiliation was granted from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong for the encompassment of the Undergraduate honours program in Sociology and Philosophy. In the year 2021 Ri-Bhoi College was brought under the People's Grant-in-Aid Scheme by the Government of Meghalaya.
