The Department of Sociology started on the 1stof March 2022 with two faculty members, Dr. Edilbert Osmond Sohtun as the Head and Jason BanshanLangstieh. The sociology department at Ri-Bhoi College offers courses in a wide range of subfields, including sociological theories, research methodology, economic sociology, sociology of religion, political sociology, and Indian sociological thought among others. The student community is exposed to a variety of concepts, theories, and research methods, including surveys, experiments, and ethnographic research. They are made aware of the existence of different institutions of society (economic, political, family and kinship, education, religion, etc.) and are trained to think critically about social issues and problems. The department is committed to advancing knowledge about human social behavior through research, teaching, and community engagement.
Sociology is a department within the social sciences that studies human social behavior, social structures, and social relationships. Sociologists use empirical research and statistical analysis to examine various aspects of human society, including culture, ethnicity, gender, class, and institutions such as family, education, and religion. Sociology is an interdisciplinary field, drawing on insights from anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, and management sciences. The department fosters a diverse and inclusive community of students and encourages them to engage in interdisciplinary research and community outreach.
The primary focus of sociology is to understand how individuals and groups interact within society and how these interactions affect and shape society as a whole. This includes examining social inequality, social change, and social problems such as poverty, crime, and discrimination.
Having completed sociology programs students go on to work in a variety of fields, including academia, government, social services, and the private sector. They often pursue careers in research, policy analysis, social work, and public administration, among others.
